Rural students´ motivation towards learning english and teachers´motivational strategies

We live in a time where learning English is a very important tool when entering the
working world. At the Universidad Mexiquense del Bicentenario campus El Oro
Estado de México, most of the students comes from rural areas where the idea that
learning English the professional development still prevails. This research addresses
two main objectives. First, to identify which motivational strategies can be considered
the most effective ones, in order to catch students´ interests; second, to get to know
and analyse what are students´ motivation when learning English as a foreign
language. The participants for this research were 50 students coming from rural
areas who were at a beginner English level, as well as 3 teachers teaching these
students. Data was collected through qualitative and quantitative methods. To
measure the quantitative variables, students answered Likert Scale questions and
for the qualitative focus teachers participated in a semi-structured interview. The
results showed that the best strategies to motivate students to be interested in
learning English are those related with both intrinsic and extrinsic motivation. This
research also highlights the fact that teachers have similar attitude to motivation and
that the key to the motivational process lays in students´ feeling of success. The
teacher must be able to make students aware of the need and importance to learn
English at university, in order to have more job opportunities in the future.
